The whole Russian narrative is based on the idea that the sovereign states in its vicinity shouldn’t really be sovereign when it comes to military or economic alliances (e.g. EU). A lot of people in the west are doing a great disservice to a rule based world order by entertaining that narrative as rational and respectable.
