Maybe I’m naive but I feel like the solution is pretty obvious: just crowdsource the cost of the certificate and only sign the software as long as the money keeps coming in. If people really do care that much they should be willing to help shoulder the cost, and if they’re not then there shouldn’t be a problem with it being unsigned.
