At what point does an open border sorta make the government illegitimate? The state is just ignoring its own laws on this issue for one reason or another.
- roenxi 3y agoProbably never. The US government has a lot of laws, ignores a lot of things. The issue is more that it is impossible to have an open border combined with any sort of welfare state. And there is a question about political compatibility - at some point there is a difference between individual migration and an invasion. But realistically, the US had the debate on this decades ago and has decided that insofar as there is a national culture it doesn't consider it threatened by migrants with foreign views. It is a bit late to get worried about it now for obvious reasons.
- shmde 3y agoDo you really think the government doesnt know about this ? That too the country known as "Big Brother" ? Americans want people who can work below minimum wage so they get to work the illegally migrated for low paying jobs like delivering food, getting their houses cleaned, gardening, construction work. The governemnt gets to play both sides by making labour cheap and also campaigning "Build the Wall".
- gettodachoppa 3y agoRICH people who control both parties want lower wages for Americans. And Democrats will never allow border protection because the illegal immigrants they gleefully import become Democrat voters. If any working/middle class people complain, the people who control the culture and media will ensure they get smeared as racists.
- greydius 3y agoHow do illegal immigrants become voters?
- gettodachoppa 3y ago1. By having children that end up voting for the party advocating welfare/free healthcare for illegal immigrants, citizenship for illegal immigrants, open borders... 2. By living in states like California that did that Machiavellian 1-2 combo of allowing illegal immigrants to get drivers licenses, then made it so that people with a driver's license are automatically registered to vote.
- maxerickson 3y agoThey automatically register elegible voters, not everyone that obtains a driver's license.
- gettodachoppa 3y agoHow do they know which voters are eligible and which aren't?
- maxerickson 3y agoHurfa durfa.
- gettodachoppa 3y agoYour terms of surrender regarding this argument have been accepted.
- maxerickson 3y agoYou call Papa Smurfa?! Go ahead and produce evidence that votes were cast by ineligible people in California. Even better if it's a significant enough number to indicate a systemic problem with the registration system.
- roenxi 3y agoIf they aren't voters that is something that is a problem that needs to be fixed. Illegal migrants make up something like 3% of the US population. It isn't fair for 3% of the resident population to be denied a right to vote; it'll become a serious social issue.
- beej71 3y agoIllegitimate? What does that mean? In the 80s when the Iron Curtain was up, we drove freely between some European countries, but certainly not East Germany. Which of those governments was more "legitimate"?
- mardifoufs 3y agoYou couldn't live in those other countries or overstay your visa though. I mean you could, but it would've been illegal. In Morocco it was a common thing to do, overstay European visas. They were still marked as illegal, and ID checks were common, and deportation very much so too. You almost always would've gotten deported if caught in an ID check. So I'm not sure how that could be considered to be open borders.
- beej71 3y agoIt's illegal to overstay a visa in the US, too, though, is it not?
