The "smart guy" assessment was made by looking at accomplishments rather than sitting in a room with the guy.
And with regards to the accomplishments the judge is still out on each and everyone of Musk companies which up to now have succedeed solely in moving vast amounts of cash from other stakeholders into the pockets of mr. Musk, without any practical improvement in the quality of life of consumers.
At least Amazon, Facebook, Google, Mircosoft and Apple (each spearheaded by their own "smart guy" and hence subject to smart guy fallacy of deeming somebody smart without sitting in a room with them) already had a trajectory where there is conclusive evidence that consumers had their quality of life improved in some way or had novel experiences thanks to such companies.

I believe in the entrepreneurial sector it's about signing off novel products and services for the consumer which unlocks a new level of quality of life for the masses and a new level of consumer satisfaction which was never seen before. Prostitution is not new, as a matter of fact it's the same experience ever since the stone age. Bill Gates, Bezos etc go to bed knowing that they have signed off GUI OS for the masses or shopping with almost real time delivery for the masses, or Zuck with social media and the Google guys with search engine, they signed off something new and unprecedented. Musk goes to bed knowing that he has signed off an elaborate financial engineering scheme to enrich himself by riding off of a political goal imposed from above which consumers would never voluntarily elect to pursue, and in ultimate analysis it's the same old car ownership experience which is a 120 years old experience, except old cars were more durable and better assembled than Teslas because they were not the front to an elaborate financial scheme. You don't get to go back in time, the pioneering entrepreneurial pleasure in the automotive sector was already taken by the likes of Henry Ford and Karl Benz etc. now what's availible is the pleasure of using automobiles as a front for financial engineering schemes and it's nowhere as rewarding, that is also the reason why Musk is acting crazy and can't find satisfaction despite his net worth being higher than every other person in history, because the person who arranges his affairs in order to have their net worth go up would never be as satisfied as the person who just tried to build something they wanted to use and then happened to stumble into larger commercial success.
