I know Rust, Service Workers, JavaScript, even heard of SpiderMonkey. Still, no idea what this is about. What problem does it solve?

  It solves the problem of cold-starts, isolation/security and portability. Basically, WASM-based cloud offerings will be able to offer more performant, cheaper and scalable compute that works everywhere regardless of the underlying architecture. Basically Docker 2.0
