I always find it interesting that discussions like these rarely mention the divide between open-source and Free Software, which is IMO a much more important distinction.
- josephcsible 3y agoIsn't that because in almost all cases of controversial licenses, the FSF and OSI agree on whether the license is okay (e.g., both are okay with the GPLv3 and AGPL, and neither are okay with the BUSL or Elastic License)?
- RetroTechie 3y agoThat's because in most cases, "open source" equates to Free/Libre software in the usual sense. Using "open source" any other way is abuse/obfuscation of the term imho (intentional or not). Using libre software with non-libre parts added that are essential to the whole (like with Android) is the bigger problem.
- andy99 3y agoAgreed, if you compare the "Open Source Definition" and the FSF software freedom principles, they are basically the same. I'd say there has been pressure to try and separate the definitions and equate "open source" with "source available". And like you say, there are ongoing "attacks" trying to get around gpl style licensing.
