I've been wondering how long until someone comes up with a drop-in logic board for the classic iPods, now that the patents are dropping off. Not only is it the only part with no new replacements, but mobile parts have come a long way. My biggest worry would be matching the smoothness of the interface - rockbox has been going at least since my iPod Mini was new, and it still doesn't feel right.
