- epcoa 3y agoNo it wouldn’t have. They sold walkmans new in the US until 2004 and Japan 2010. Cassettes were not retro tech in the early 2000s, especially among the poor. And for recording, cassettes and microcasettes were still common then, digital voice recorders were just starting to supplant them. Walkmans and discmans had longer lives.
