The thing is, any human group, company, academia, etc...are influenced by politics, and those who do it well get the attention and the resources. It doesn't matter if they are technically brilliant or not. There is no place where you don't need good communication and selling skills. That's a fact of life and it seem impossible to remove this from any of these institutions. Kariko seems to be that very hardworking intelligent person that really needs an eloquent and self-marketer sidekick to thrive. She is a Steve Wozniak in need for a Steve Jobs.
