Ditching your commute qualified: worth –$40K/year in happiness
- bell-cot 3y agoImportant Qualifiers - The article quotes a radio interview with another author for: > the top two things we hate the most on a day-to-day basis is, No. 1: housework and No. 2: the daily commute in our cars. In fact, if you can cut an hourlong commute each way out of your life, it’s the [happiness] equivalent of making up an extra $40,000 a year if you’re at the $50- to $60,000 level. Obvious additional qualifiers (many commutes are not an hour each way, you may really need the money, opinions on housework vary widely, etc.) also apply.

- marssaxman 3y agoI totally believe this. Living in Seattle, I have twice taken jobs on the east side of Lake Washington, and each time that long commute made me miserable. I have sometimes wondered how much of a premium an eastside company would have to offer before I could be tempted to put up with it again; $40k sounds like a minimum. I'd probably have to be desperate for a job, regardless of the financial incentive; I'm not sure you can buy enough happiness to make up for the grind of a bad commute.
