“The blend of people from different layers of society is getting higher,” Thomas Monberg, a member of Parliament and the Social Democrats’ spokesman for housing, said in an email response to questions. He said the government acted because it could not afford to “wait until people are killing each other in gang wars.”
Notable things here. It's considered an experiment by the Danish, which shows unusual humility, since it might fail. It is a Social Democrat experiment, which is surprising because I imagine the knee-jerk reaction from the American left will be to descry forcing "non-white" people to do anything against their will. The policy's stated purpose is to avoid much worse outcome down the line. What data showed them that gang wars were coming? And who/ can we use as a control group to see if the Danish government has done the right thing? It brings up an interesting question about assimilation and how much can be or should be demanded of immigrants by the host nation.

- hef19898 3y agoIntegration, yes. Assimilation, absolutely not.
- huytersd 3y agoWhat’s the difference?
- hef19898 3y agoYou seriously don't get it, do you? To talk in extemes: The Borg (which are not Swedish as we know) assimilate, the Federation integrates.
- huytersd 3y agoI don’t follow Star Trek. What does it mean in real life?
- hef19898 3y agoAssimilation is a one way street: the new arrivals give up everything they were and had beforey they become exactly like everyone else at the place they arrive. Integration is a two way street: The new arrivals retain their identity, but adapt to the new environment and society while the new society also adapts to the new arrivals. The latter is what works, the former not so much.
- huytersd 3y agoOkay then I mean assimilation. Not integration.
- hef19898 3y agoMay I ask you why?
- huytersd 3y agoBecause a country has built up a culture and a character and that’s what has historically worked for the people in those countries. I’d much rather see, for instance, an African or an Arab in lederhosen in Germany speaking fluent German and a German in a disdasha in the Middle East speaking Arabic than some sort of one to one association between race/ethnicity and culture.
- AnimalMuppet 3y agoIf the American left were being what it claims to be, it would have concern for the non-whites whose neighborhoods are being overrun by gangs, not just concern for not imposing white values and culture on non-whites.
- anthk 3y agoIn Spain when I met a black kid decades ago I didn't seek for it's African legacy or whatever nonsense the American Left states on his persona. He had the exact culture as me, as he grew up there, with the same Northern Spanish accent from the Bay of Biscay and all. Who cares about what his relatives where thousands of years ago.
