The Ouya 10 Years Later: Was It That Bad?
- sp332 3y agoThe video is missing some important parts of the story. To launch a new games platform you have a chicken-and-egg problem where you need developers and users to show up at the same time. The video mentions that Ouya removed some barriers to develop and sell games, but their plan was to pander even harder to users. They hoped that making things extra-appealing to customers would entice more developers to show up. For example, they initially required all games to have a free demo. This was an extra hurdle for developers, especially ones making little indie games that are hard to split up into a free tier and a paid tier. Eventually that requirement was removed. The hardware was not the problem. Anyway if the business model had been more successful, a follow-up with more powerful hardware at the same price point would have been feasible after two or three years. The failed experiment pointed the way for future indie consoles like the Playdate: you have to pander super hard to developers first, and secondly to customers. Edit: Oh and if you want to check out what was available, check out the Ouya Collection at https://archive.org/details/Ouya_Compilation_2019_09 https://archive.org/details/Ouya_Compilation_2019_09 It includes APK files for probably every app available on the store at the end of the Ouya's life.
