Can you not run a virtual mainframe environment on a modern pc?
- tyingq 3y agoYou can run a very old environment (MVS) legally on a PC, or a very new one (z/OS) either illegally, or with lots and lots of cash. The emulator itself isn't the issue, it's the OS. https://sdl-hercules-390.github.io/html/ https://sdl-hercules-390.github.io/html/
- jakobson14 3y agoSuffice to say, you don't just go download your favourite open-source operating system in the mainframe world. You pay IBM a shitload of money for their proprietary one. There is linux-on-Z but that's a completely different environment, intentionally. It's basically running linux in a virtualized environment (the only kind of environment on a mainframe) so that stuff expecting POSIX can run on the same hardware as mainframe jobs.
