I taught myself canning ten years ago and found it pretty straightforward. I used this website and the Ball book, and have done many batches of jams, pickles, and veggies. I think I only fully wasted the first batch of 8 half-pint jams I made, which were basically fruit leather, otherwise things have turned out pretty well. I give jam as holiday gifts, and in years where I haven’t made any I get people asking for it, so I take that as a sign I’m doing something right!
