I feel like this is one of those things you learn pretty early on in your life as a programmer and then just accept it without question and then start adding in superfluous variable declarations and assignments to preserve the behavior you expect in those odd scenarios where you know your compiler might decide it knows better than you. I had no idea it was a thing that could be debated or changed, very interesting.
