Reasons Our Civilization Will Soon Collapse
- tuatoru 3y agoI love these, they're great entertainment. A nice rehearsal of most of the ways that we're fouling our nest - resource depletion (especially high-quality sand), topsoil destruction, groundwater depletion, bio-diversity loss (under which is included fishery destruction) and increasing debilitation of governments in many parts of the world. You kids are going to be living in interesting times.
- RetroTechie 3y agoA good overview. While the article reads on the pessimistic side (in short: existing solutions won't cut it), in general: all the things described are happening already. Mostly getting worse. And 99.99% certain: humanity is not prepared for the combination + 2nd order effects of these issues. On a side note: shouldn't "polycrisis", "multicrisis" or a similar term deserve its own WP article? If only to explain the concept? There is one on societal collapse: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Societal_collapse https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Societal_collapse But it doesn't mention any such term. Or much discussion about how causes may interact (other than that causes are complex & may involve domino effects). As HN readers will know: the whole is more than the sum of its parts.
- _frkl 3y agoThere is Daniel Schmachtenbergers 'Metacrisis', which comes with its own little spin, but is probably close, and seems to gain traction. Could not find anything about him or the term on Wikipedia though, which I find a bit curious. Maybe just me being stupid and not looking right though
- lucasyvas 3y agoThis was a delightful bed time read... it got even better when I starting fact checking it and nothing stood out as wrong.
