It is something that I had considered too. (For this reason, some of my shell scripts that involve curl (for sprunge and for icanhazip) have "| cat -v".) Ideally there should be some way to cancel responses (echoback), which would avoid some of the problems; I am not sure if this can be done. Another thing I had considered is to make a "universal escape sequence" which is recognized anywhere including in the middle of something else. There are other considerations, too. (I had considered writing a terminal emulator, and will have to consider this and other things.) (I had also considered operating system design, where the command-line interface would work differently than this anyways.)
