I love the idea of wood cutting boards, they also inhibit bacteria better than plastic.
But we bought all sorts, IKEA to Williams Sonoma $100 hardwood boards, religiously washed and dried them, oiled them monthly. But they all split and crack so quickly
Bamboo seems nice enough, but those are bound in plastic/resin and coated with something other than mineral oil — not sure they are better.
We stock up on the polypropylene thin cutting boards from IKEA. They are made in Taiwan which has a bit better regulation than other places, and polypropylene is an old plastic that is known to be very inert if not the most inert.
- mulmen 3y ago> they also inhibit bacteria better than plastic. Huh? That’s news to me and the opposite of my understanding. Can you elaborate? I have no issues with cracking or splitting with my wooden boards. Are you running them through the dishwasher?

- nytesky 3y agoNo never dishwasher, never even soak them. Are they hardwood or bamboo? What brand. Bamboo held up fyi. It’s just not wood.
- Cthulhu_ 3y agoCould be the hot water is working on the glue, or it still causes enough swelling to split.
- Cthulhu_ 3y agoThis is why you aren't allowed to serve food on wooden novelty plates (officially, doesn't stop some people), the wood cannot be cleaned / disinfected properly.
