Not all profit is created equal. Sometimes in order to chase greater short-term rewards, you sacrifice your access to long-term rewards. Pushing your dev team into unsustainable practices may increase next quarter's profits, but might also mean that your company is bankrupt 2 years from now. I would amend what the author wrote to say that a lot of stuff is being driven with an eye for short-term profit, at the expense of long-term value.
