We've had separate food waste bins in my area for ages.
They have many problems that seem hard to solve.
They are small, about 5L or 10L capacity. If you make them bigger then
the food begins to rot in summer if not collected very frequently. The
council are stingy about supplying, collecting and replacing them, so
neighbours will steal someone else's. We simply gave up constantly
asking BCP for a replacement that never came.
But worse is the foxes. There are lots of rural and urban foxes in the
UK. When food bins are put out these smart and tenacious critters
find a way in, so in the morning you'll wake up to chicken bones and
vegetables strewn across your path and down the road.
Hopefully the next recycling initiative brings better design ideas.
