I think it's more that they are not focusing on their previous niches in the laptop/desktop world. There are lots of those apps where they enhanced the generic user's ease of use, while maybe not maintaining features that weren't used. I wouldn't be surprised if their apps are instrumented to work out what features are needed or used. Their apps are now effectively cross platform across all of the devices you have, so they have focused on making that more seamless, while, of course, trying to hook you into Apple One to get the shared storage you need in iCloud.
