I think we should give more credit to Musk's political and regulation influencing power. These tax rebates didn't randomly end up in Tesla's pocket. We can bash on him for the mountain of stupid stuff he does, but dancing with the government in highly regulated fields is where he seems to shine.

And make his fans believe he’s a champion of free market and a self made man that is fighting big government. We can see it clearly in action in this thread, it’s working on many.
