Blog post author here – happy to take any questions. We're looking to unify the conda + PyPI ecosystems and build a really nice cross-platform, language independent package manager (which is called pixi).
- singhrac 3y agoAny chance you guys, Charlie Marsh/Astral, and Armin Ronacher will ever team up? I’m really excited about next-gen tooling but would love a cargo-like “one true path”. At the very least keep the tools compatible?
- droelf 3y agoYeah, I think it would be awesome to work on top of the same foundations (rip & resolvo being two of those, and konstin's, who works with Charlie at astral, pep440_rs and pep508_rs being two others). We'll have some more conversations around this in the upcoming weeks I hope.
- Uptrenda 3y agoThis is really impressive work tbh. Good job.
- out-of-ideas 3y agoas an arch user; i gotta say `aur/rip` is already in use; and i can only say good luck if you keep to a 3char name
- dcow 3y agoLast updated: 2015. Sourceforge. Perhaps packages that are borderline irrelevant should not squat on prime name real estate. Plus cant rip ship as rip-py and still install as rip on the bet that nobody is actually going to be trying to use these tools simultaneously?
- tubs 3y agoAgreed no one uses those defunct tools like awk or roff, let's re-use them! Who cares if every build script in the world breaks, progress waits for no one.
- Tarq0n 3y agoName reuse is a huge security concern and probably shouldn't be done even if a name is under-utilized.
- droelf 3y agorip isn't really planned as a tool that you would install on your computer. It's a low-level library.
- Grimburger 3y agoAlso rm replacement written in rust: https://github.com/nivekuil/rip https://github.com/nivekuil/rip
- _ahxg 3y agoAny plans to integrate this with Poetry?
- droelf 3y agoNo plans but we would be happy to explore this further if the poetry-devs want to. Maybe they'll join us at PackagingCon next week: https://packaging-con.org/ https://packaging-con.org/
- Tarq0n 3y agoI noticed you're an incorporated organisation. What's your business model?
- droelf 3y agoWe'll build some features sooner or later on the repository side that are going to be interesting for enterprise customers. But we have a strong and true commitment to open source. A non-open-source package manager would definitely not work for our community!
- adonese 3y agoIs it different than rye (rye-up.com)?
- droelf 3y agoYeah, rye uses a Python build from indiegreg while we use the Python builds from conda-forge (which is a community project with many maintainers). Conda-forge also produces packages for much more (nodejs, Qt, HDF5, C/C++ compilers, LLVM ...). So we have access to a pretty big repository and a large community already :)
