For alternative drop-in fuels, whether renewable or not, there is major pressure to make them just plain higher quality than conventional even when it's a near-equivalent complete hydrocarbon itself. This applies to both synthetic and recycled materials and the requirements are reflecting that. There is going to be some correlation to higher quality fuels burning cleaner and resulting in fewer emissions to begin with. Looks like these researchers have gotten some really impressive numbers by focusing some incredible effort.
