I upvote things I think are valuable; empathy, humor, thoughtful explanations. Just when I think about it. I also upvote comments that sparked a lot of good discussion for visibility. I downvote things that are rude, mostly terse point scoring behavior (not addressing what was said but implying something about the poster). I flag outright aggro stuff.
