Which is why the officers involved should pay, with their jobs. The department should fire them to demonstrate to the public that the officer's actions were unacceptable and won't be tolerated. I'm sure they won't, but if they care about about improving how they're viewed by the public they're going to have to start holding their own responsible for abuses of power.
It shouldn't end with the police either. That mayor needs to be voted out next election if not sooner.
- madaxe_again 3y agoYeah, but firing them would make the next family thanksgiving for the chief mightily awkward. Small town PDs are usually family businesses.
- drewcoo 3y agoThey have different last names. Are you sure they're related? https://newtongov.org/Directory.aspx?did=10 https://newtongov.org/Directory.aspx?did=10
- mcny 3y agoI think the odds are high given the population is only about fifteen thousand.
- ceejayoz 3y agoI don't have the same last name as my parents. My mother doesn't have the same last name as her parents. Why would you think this alone indicates anything about their relationships?
- plagiarist 3y agoI thought they meant family metaphorically, a way to describe high amounts of nepotism.
- 14 3y agoThat is a start but won’t help as it is common knowledge that police often move a county over and get hired for another department after getting fired. What would actually help us is they were personally sued and handed a bill for $50,000 paid by their own money.
- FireBeyond 3y agoPerhaps there should be some form of register for police, that tracks officers dismissed, or who resigned to avoid termination, etc., so that cities and departments could use that to inform hiring decisions. Oh, wait, there absolutely is such a thing! That's great! Except a large number (majority, even) of police unions around the country have it written into their CBA that this register cannot be used for hiring decisions... Well, shit.
