Systems Administrator -> Cloud Engineer -> Infrastructure Engineer -> Site Reliability Engineer.
The more to the right, the less I had to interact with bare metal servers, but apply my knowledge of building them and operating almost every day.
- VirusNewbie 3y agoInfrastructure Engineers are usually SWEs who are working on infra. SRE is a combo SWE and Cloud Engineer, often writing their own tools for the job (while I'd consider a cloud engineer to just use existing tools).
- hiAndrewQuinn 3y agoI wonder if maybe I got off the elevator at the right time, then. Becoming an SRE would be cool, and it was satisfying to justify my salary several times over just by finding and deleting some cloud resources nobody used anymore, but I think I just want to be closer to the product itself.
- VirusNewbie 3y agoeh, depends on what kind of SRE the company has. I'm a SWE/SRE and just the other day I made a small change to product code to optimize some threading issues.
