Twitter Is Throttling Patreon Links, Creators Say It Undermines Their Livelihood
- Bluescreenbuddy 3y agoWell yeah. Twitter doesn't get a cut of what the user makes by posting their links on twitter profile. Wouldn't surprise me if they banned any mention of it and OF and other other sites.
- rsynnott 3y agoThey tried that a while back; there was a brief period when you'd actually get auto-banned for mentioning the dread name "Mastodon" (and maybe also Bluesky?)
- electrondood 3y agoDon't deadname X! /s In all seriousness, Elon made a ton of noise about Twitter being the world's town square for public discussion. In reality, all that happened was that they got rid of the TOS, then realized they needed a TOS (to bring back fleeing advertisers who know that it's not good for business to have your brand next to toxic content), then blocked public access entirely, and now they're silencing the voices of anyone who doesn't pay for speech.
- deburo 3y agoIf you're using Twitter to follow popular fellows, you don't really care about pay-for-reach.
- sschueller 3y agoDoesn't Elon dead name his child?
- lesuorac 3y ago> "Two wrongs make a right" has been considered as a fallacy of relevance, in which an allegation of wrongdoing is countered with a similar allegation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_wrongs_don%27t_make_a_right https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_wrongs_don%27t_make_a_righ...
- chownie 3y agoNot that I think there's an actual argument at play -- since OP was talking in jest I believe -- but while we're at it, that's the fallacy fallacy. Referring to the brand by a previous name (one still on the site I think?) isn't the same as referring to a person by a previous name. No one feels bad about it when my mum calls Starbursts "fruit chewies", it doesn't make a social situation uncomfortable.
- sigmar 3y agoCorporations aren't people. I'm gonna keep calling it Twitter because "x ceo" and "ex-ceo" are phonetically identical and makes listening to podcasts very confusing
- WorldMaker 3y agoX under Musk's management wants to be the American version of WeChat, so I've taken to using the Chinese pronunciation of 'x' in their modern latin letter orthography. (It's basically English "sh" as in "shoe" but the tongue is raised to block more of the flow of air, to make it sound a bit more like a "hush" sound.) If for some reason, such as in a podcast that sounds too much like white noise to the audience saying things like "x ceo" pronounced that way, I've found "Xitter" to be a useful intermediate form.
- rsynnott 3y agoI doubt anyone is seriously suggesting there's any problem with calling Twitter Twitter. A company is not a person, and is not normally afforded the same courtesies around self-identification that a person is.
- hn1986 3y agoI posted about throttling SubStack and Instagram here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37780813 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37780813
- pornel 3y agoSorry, but people need to find other places to communicate and promote, because this isn't going to get any better. Twitter was dead the moment Elon took it over. It's his toy, doing whatever he wants. Even if you pressure him, he'll reverse the throttling for a moment, act dumb as if it never happened, and then screw it again in some way. You can't win with Elon on Elon's turf.
- eureka-belief 3y agoWhat I don’t understand is why Musk thinks that he won’t be nailed by anti-trust suits by governments. Google is currently having their internal communications exposed to the world. Can you imagine what scandalous nuggets would show up if internal memos in Xitter were to be brought to court?
