Five times stronger than steel: Japan's new 'wood
- userinanother 3y agoWhat does that even mean stronger? Like Fty Ftu Rockwell hardness? This stuff is so light on detail it’s probably a very niche product good in only certain uses
- octokatt 3y agoThe above link is a PR-based article, the harder science stuff is linked below [0] [1]. > The measurements showed a tensile stiffness of 86 GPa (gigapascals) for the material and a tensile strength of 1.57 GPa. > “The bio-based CNFs fabricated here are 8 times stiffer and have strengths higher than natural dragline spider silk fibers,” Dr. Söderberg said. [0] It's actually a little more exciting, since the human body doesn't reject cellulose, which means we might get better joint replacements as production scales up and becomes cheaper.
