That's what `modifyOtherKeys` mode is for, introduced by xterm a couple decades ago. It tells the terminal to report modified keys with a control sequence that explicitly specifies the base key and modifiers.
- bsder 3y agoPlease, dear Lord, no. No. Do not do this. Use something with a sane key event handling system. List here: https://sw.kovidgoyal.net/kitty/keyboard-protocol/ https://sw.kovidgoyal.net/kitty/keyboard-protocol/ (My particular use that drove me down this rabbit hole was using "Shift" for selection. You CANNOT DO THIS with "standard" terminals as you cannot detect when shift gets pressed or released without also pressing another key.)
- akdor1154 3y agoThat's a great resource, TIL ty.
- o11c 3y agoKitty is really overstating the problem here, and introducing significant problems of its own.
- yjftsjthsd-h 3y agoWhat problems is it introducing?
- bsder 3y agoPlease explain to me how to do what I asked--"selection while holding shift"--with any terminal other than one that supports the kitty protocol. I'll wait ... (It's this kind of basic stuff that doesn't work that makes me absolutely laugh my ass off when people claim that "AI will take all the programming jobs".)
- LanternLight83 3y agoI have a lot of respect for Kitty's uncompromisingly opinionated design, standing apart from the rest (for better or worse). IME the notorious issue with tapping ESC is a major bummer, and Kitty is right not to settle for the status quo -- with impressively wide support too!
- alanbernstein 3y agoI've been trying to understand this problem for years (https://superuser.com/questions/555886/why-cant-i-highlight-text-in-a-linux-terminal-emulator-with-shiftarrow-keys https://superuser.com/questions/555886/why-cant-i-highlight-...). It made me feel like a crazy person, since it seems that almost nobody even understands that something is wrong here.
