What you would need to disable would be Bluetooth, cellular (e.g. OnStar), and potentially TPMS.
- lapetitejort 3y ago> TPMS Curious about this. What else does this do besides measure the pressure of your tires? Or could the system transmit some other info?
- edrxty 3y agoIt continuously transmits a unique ID. You've probably seen large panel antennas mounted on highways, these are frequently there to read this ID and use it for volume/transit time stats.
- jeffbee 3y agoWho cares? Your car has, and is required by law to have, a unique identifier that is clearly visible from 100 meters away.
- _moof 3y agoI don't particularly care but this thread started as a discussion of how to eliminate as many radiated identifiers as possible.
- akira2501 3y agoAnd yet.. they still leave you with the ability to completely remove it from the vehicle in under 5 minutes and then drive on the roads anyways. The idea that I have to allow myself to be compromised or ignore that compromise because there's some other _partially_ equivalent identifier is not justified.
- _moof 3y agoThe sensors aren't physically wired to the car; they're radios inside the tires, and as edrxty noted, they transmit a unique ID.
- bluGill 3y agoTPMS is often integrated into a lot of other radios as well. That way they only have to certify one radio device.
- vitaflo 3y agoCellular (which is how the data is sent) is in the same module as the GPS. Cutting the fuse or just disconnecting the module (IE the shark fin on the roof) will indeed do the trick.
- _moof 3y agoYes, but even then, you can disable a cellular transmitter (cut a trace) without disabling the GPS.
- wwweston 3y agoCan I take it off and attach it to a drone I can fly on auto-improbable paths for fun in my spare time?
- warkdarrior 3y agoMental note to talk to the boss about the next design: the model should be on the same fuse as the ignition.
- mdp2021 3y agoAre you sure vehicles that are planned to have features enabled will still work without that? There are modules which should be regarded as secondary and that will put the vehicle in a sort of "degraded state" when inhibited.
- vitaflo 3y agoMay depend on vehicle but I detached it on my car to install my ham radio antenna where the shark fin used to be. It's a perfect spot for it. The car didn't care it was gone. Of course, I can't use the cars GPS or XM Radio, but I never did anyway cuz I use CarPlay.
- throwaway5199 3y agoI know in the mobile phone world, the GPS hardware is sometimes on the exact same chip as the cellular hardware, so you can't really disable them independently. In that case, they could theoretically talk to each other without software involvement, which is a little scary.
- bonton89 3y agoGPS sensor results could still feed a cache of historical location data which will be uploaded when it next gets a connection, likely when brought in for service.
- Encrypt-Keeper 3y agoWho goes to a dealer for service?
