- PaulHoule 3y agoThe war in Palestine is particularly pernicious in how it crosses ideological lines. I can't support the actions of Hamas at all, but Israel cannot frame itself as innocent in that, as I see it, politicians such as Benjamin Netanyahu and Arial Sharon have been playing a long game towards the elimination and marginalization of the population that was there before 1948 that can easily be compared to the Roman dispersal of the Jewish people that culminated in 73 AD or the "solution" that the Nazis had to an unwanted culture in Europe. The difference is that Israel can't do anything so drastic and decisive but instead will manage a series of crises that will gradually disperse, divide, and weaken the Palestinians. Israel has within it one of the most modern and liberal societies in the world and it also has a terrible dark side. It's a problem that is very difficult to confront.

- PaulHoule 3y agoBattle lines have long been drawn over Israel. I think people who already have an opinion have been activated by the situation, I don't think those opinions have changed that much, except the opinions of politicians who have the burden of representing their constituents, donors, social acceptability and such.
- sillywalk 3y agoIsrael is an Apartheid state that has kept Gaza as an open-air prison for decades, getting worse since 2007, when the siege/blockade started and the people there were 'put on a diet' i.e. enough calories are allowed in so that the population doesn't starve outright, just have chronic malnutrition. A million kids under 18 have known that reality since birth. Now Israel is openly calling for genocide, have cut off what little food and water Gaza had, and have asked a million people to move in 24 hours. Where they might go, in an area the size of Detroit, is left unstated. This is somehow called 'self-defence'. No, I'm not an anti-semite, put it back in the deck. No, I don't want Israel to be destroyed No, I don't support Hamas, though Israel did back in the 70s/80s as a counterweight to the PLO Yes, I think Israel has a right to self-defence, but so long as it continues the ethnic cleansing, the building of settlements on occupied territory, as treating millions of people as subhumans to be kept under heel, I find I have no sympathy. The only real difference between Bibi and Hamas, is that Bibi has killed and terrorized a lot more civilians.
