9 weeks of severance for a company with 1 billion in net cash is pathetic. We find out a lot about leaders of companies when they go through layoffs.
You'll notice they often have much more generous terms of the severance when their employees live in countries that have actually worked hard to provide better terms for employees. In the United States we give companies incredible latitude in how they treat their employees (it's legal to treat them terribly) and many companies choose to do just that.
We need to stop relying on corporations to be kind and create a social safety net that helps employees in this situation. Most people in the United States live paycheck to paycheck (including many in tech). Our lack of a social safety net costs us too much collectively and individually.
