As someone who really feels the effect of dry air in the winter and has tried all the commonly available types of humidifier, I'll just say skip everything and get the big, wicking type aka evaporative humidifiers. They are the only thing that works well with tap water and the only type that has the kind of output you need for even a small apartment.
