Why the Internet isn't fun anymore
- theodric 3y ago> The social-media Web as we knew it, a place where we consumed the posts of our fellow-humans and posted in return, appears to be over. HN is a rare gem and must be protected
- dartos 3y agoA lot of that fun internet just isn’t indexable from google. Many private communities and discord servers have replaced communities that once existed on traditional social media platforms. It’s not less fun in general, all the life was sucked out of big social media and new internet users saw that and decided to move to closed platforms like discord
- bell-cot 3y agoYou know you're old when...your reaction to the headline is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September
- RGamma 3y agoWe must be several Septembers deep by now. Eventually even TikTok lusers may feel that way as well.
- vinberdon 3y ago> S.E.O. hackers have ruined the trick of adding “Reddit” to searches to find human-generated answers. Just add "site:reddit.com" to the end of your search query. Nothing SEOs (like me) can do about that, Google will only return results from reddit.com. I, personally, find it really funny when the top result is some spam coupon site with "[search query] reddit" as the page title. Google really should be smarter than that.
- sdflhasjd 3y agoNot sure if id call it ruined just yet, but I was searching for some products on reddit the other day having not done for a few months and there was just so much more astroturfing than I remember. I bet GPT isn't helping here either.
- RetroTechie 3y agoAd-supported, centralized platforms. Aka money/greed, control freaks & their algorithms. That is what has turned present-day internet into crap. (feel free to include AI ;-) The nice corners are those where above factors don't apply.
