The whole "notification alert" format is a form of micro assault on your attention faculty if you think about it. Sometimes, that tiny bit is all that is needed to screw with the focus of whatever you're doing which in all likelihood is arguably more important than whatever that wretched notification is about.
But indeed, one can't blame just the technology here. It's always up to the individual to put it on silent or vibrate mode for those important focus periods. But having said that, you can't deny that technology which was once the slave of humanity is slowly starting to become the master. One bit at a time just like that frog sitting on the pot getting boiled.

Slack started doing something lately that I can’t figure out how to stop. It jiggles or re-sorts the channels occasionally. Very minor, but it’s the only thing moving on my three-screen desktop. Pulls my focus too often. Skype does a thing too, telling me it is checking the connection. Why tf does it have to tell me? Of course there’s no info anywhere and it’s impossible to describe in a search anyway. Maybe I’ll post an Ask HN.
