Some things in life are meant to be discovered and others are meant to be learned. There are plenty of opportunities for haha moments with the former but not so much with the latter. Assuming you are a "tech worker" of some sorts, your editor, your OS, your shell, your languages and frameworks, etc. are all tools meant to be learned and mastered, not fidget toys.
Discovering insert mode completion in Vim after 9 years is a failure, not something to celebrate.
- keepamovin 3y agoI guess that depends on your perspective! I'm celebrating it! :) Do you have instances in your life where you've failed?
- mrmanner 3y agoThe name of this site is not "tech worker news" though ;)
- johncoltrane 3y agoAnd it has very little to do with "hackers", too.
- slap_shot 3y agoThis just hit as probably the most powerful comment I've read on here in the 15 years I've been reading. Wow. Regretfully, I can think of dozens of {tools|processes|concepts} I treated as "fidget toys" rather than critical things to be learned and mastered. It fucking hurts to think about it. This comment is the right attitude and I hope to think of this often. Thank you.
- keepamovin 3y agoHaha! Dude, careful what you're praising here. You don't want to encourage this guy to think he's able decide what's a failure or success for other people, do you? Haha! He can't, of course. He doesn't exactly seem to have 'benevolence' written over his comments here, tho he does make some good points. So just be careful what you're praising, and and might be enabling. Hahaha! Right? :)
