Behind the scenes with Raspberry Pi 5
- jauntywundrkind 3y agoDIY-ing or learning how to build a southbridge is like the most obvious & great use for an FPGA, but of course the whole mid-range of FPGAs has been AWOL for most of a decade now & has unusable closed software systems. AMD is talking about how they are going to catch up with CUDA & make a "moat-less" competition in GPUs, but ideally they'd be singing the same tune for FPGAs and trying to make good open ecosystem tools. Vivado is AMD's CUDA, for hardware. Also their entry point is quite high: 16nm Artix UltraScale+ starts at $200, the AU10P with 96k cells. You have to get to the Kinetix line to get >1 embedded PCIe controller. https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Xilinx/XCAU10P-1FFVB676E?qs=DRkmTr78QAT5i5FLROvR7g%3D%3D https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Xilinx/XCAU10P-1FFVB676... Anyhow, fun seeing the whole right side of their dev board loaded with power configuration. That, I guess, is how you migrate from manufacturer provided PMIC to DIY.
