Israel is mostly secular country which was founded by secular people. The "god promised land" is narrative that is used by extreme religious right. It's way out of mainstream in Israel
- jfengel 3y agoIt had a largely secular foundation but its government is dominated by Orthodox Jews. The religious right is in charge of the government -- to the horror of a lot of younger and more secular Israelis, but they are nonetheless running the country. That right wing government has a strong interest in settling the country, in ways that antagonize the Palestinian population. That absolutely does not excuse a terrorist attack, but we're now locked in a vicious cycle where a lot of Israeli voters put in place a government that is hostile to Palestinians, and each attack entrenches it further. Those secular Israelis have not been able to keep power. They may be dominant in numbers and in culture, but the government sees the land as "god promised" and acts on it.
- tguvot 3y agomy point still stands. from perspective of vast majority of population there is no religious aspect. and current government is temporary (especially given what is happening) and to the extreme disappointment of the extreme right members they can't do nothing from what they wanted to do to further their agenda. and orthodoxes do not care about this aspect. their only interest is blanket exception from army and more money
