I for one am sad to see this go. I understand the rationale—not wanting a spec dependent upon a single implementation (SQLite)—but IndexedDB was never a better alternative. It worked in a pinch, but IndexedDB was always a solution in search of a problem. The old adage of data storage still applies: a lot of folks hate it, but everyone knows SQL.
At least there are alternatives waiting in the wings (https://sqlite.org/wasm/doc/tip/about.md https://sqlite.org/wasm/doc/tip/about.md), but a lot of sites are going to break with WebSQL's removal. It may not have been an official part of the spec, but compared to using IndexedDB, Session Storage, and Local Storage, it was awesome.
Pour one out for the browser API that could have been: truly SQL on the edge, far more the edge than even Lambda@Edge. The web has always been distributed computing at its most extreme.
