Lit is an amazing piece of software and I'm glad more companies are making this change. After years of React, Lit is the fresh restart that frontend development needs. No build required, no mystic hooks, no VDOM, completely based on web standards and has native interop with other tens of frameworks and UI Libraries.
And Shoelace is the same: one of the best UI frameworks out there.
- tonyedgecombe 3y agoAnd on it goes, the continual churn of front end development.
- meiraleal 3y agoIsn't it the case for the backend and cloud too? The frontend landscape actually changed way less than the backend in the past 10 years.
- ch_123 3y agoHow so? I for one have been using a remarkably similar JVM stack for backend development over the last decade.
- meiraleal 3y agoThere are people using the same frontend tech for far longer than this. Your argument doesn't prove the churn in frontend is bigger than in the backend.
- fourseventy 3y agoFrontend landscape changed less than backend in the past 10 years? lol no
- meiraleal 3y agoHow it didn't? Amazon AWS alone added more changes to the backend landscape than all changes in the frontend. New NPM packages for old established frameworks isn't really churn, people complaining about it are just lazy. React is 10 years old, Angular is older and Vue is around 10 years, too. Now to the backend, how many frameworks are out there? First you have multiple cloud providers each with their own set of preferred services. Then you have the old frameworks like Rails, Django, PHP (wordpress, symfony, laravel), which changed a bit less, just like frontend but they are just a % of the backend. There are also the corporate backends like Spring and many more, which although they are still running and stable, 10 years ago Java was the obvious choice for most if not all enterprise projects but not anymore. Then you also have multiple backend providers like supabase, firebase.
- pjmlp 3y agoNo, I have been mostly using the same Java and. NET stuff like forever, even despite some heavy changes on those ecosystems.
- kasabali 3y agoSir please refrain from whataboutism
- CharlieDigital 3y agoIf anything, it feels like a return to the fundamentals of web. React is the aberrant abstraction that layered a really broken MVC-ish layer on web front ends.
- tentacleuno 3y agoEven if this does have a slight tinge of flamebait, Lit is technically a lot closer to the metal, when compared to something like React. It works through standard custom elements (not Yet Another Protocol), which brings quite a lot of advantages (less coupling, interoperability, etc.) while also providing helpful utilities for creating and managing instances of custom elements. Lit is... well, lit.
- hermitcrab 3y agoAnother month, another Microsoft GUI framework. ;0)
- tonyedgecombe 3y agoI'm pretty sure they start the next one on the day they release the previous one.
- gardenhedge 3y agoHow is there no build required?
- meiraleal 3y agoIt is just JS. Why would it need a build? If TypeScript is used then it needs a build. Otherwise you can just import lit from a CDN and use it. https://lit.dev/docs/getting-started/#use-bundles https://lit.dev/docs/getting-started/#use-bundles
- gardenhedge 3y agoOh, duh - I looked at a TS example. Thanks
- tentacleuno 3y agoIt doesn't require compilation, if you avoid features like decorators. It's just standard JavaScript, not JSX.
