Protecting art from being stolen by DALL-E crawler
I made a basic version of an idea that I had, which I would like some feedback on. Basically, DALL-E & MidJourney steal a lot of images from across the web, and a lot of it is hard-worked on art. The idea of my application is that artists upload their original image, and it uses a process I thought of to make it so that it can't be crawled.
Please note that it works best on a computer/tablet/anything with a larger screen.
Here's the url: artshield.kendasi.com
- egypturnash 3y agoHow does this work? Have you tried training anything on images processed with this and verified that whatever you're doing actually glitches up the resulting datasets?
- createTheFuture 3y agoWell, I've tried making an automated crawler for this, and it doesn't crawl the images from this properly - so yeah, it does work. And no, it's not because it's a PHP script. You can email me at info@kendasi.com if you want to hear how it actually works - I'm really proud of this idea, so I'd rather not just share out here how it works.
- berbec 3y agoIs it possible because the URL is a php script, the crawler will skip it? I would think OpenAI could figure that level of obfuscation out.
- superkuh 3y agoThere's a very easy way to prevent your art from being public. Don't make it public. If you do make it public please don't complain when my eyes, or a computer program, perceives it.
- createTheFuture 3y agoWell there are people who want to share their are online, but still don't want a bot to copy from their art.
- superkuh 3y agoYes. It's pretty common that artists don't understand concepts like generative AI training.
- egypturnash 3y agoIt's pretty common that AI fans don't understand concepts like "theft".
- superkuh 3y agoI highly doubt any AI training is removing the file from the artist's computer.
- Turing_Machine 3y agoCopyright infringement is not "theft". Never has been.
- starbase 3y agoNothing is being "stolen." Learning is not theft. Imagine applying OP's reasoning to calculus or programming. We'd all be "stealing" from Leibniz and Ritchie, and progress would be crushed.
- createTheFuture 3y agoWhile I do agree with you in the math areas, the problem with this is different. These image generators are creating new images that are extremely similar, and without credit ever. It would kinda ruin an artists job if a bot can make everything they can make in hours, but in a matter of seconds.
- glowingvoices 3y agoNot really, no. Firstly, such image-generation models are based on mathematical concepts (it's literally math all the way down). I don't see the problem you raise about artistic jobs, because it doesn't seem like they're disappearing anytime soon. It's not the AI model that'll replace artists, but other artists using the AI models. Also, could you please cite your statement about "extremely similar images" being created?
- rich_sasha 3y agoRegardless of what you call it, it seems a reasonable wish for an artist for their work to be broadly available to humans and not used to feed an AI algo.
