There were many microprocessor designs out or coming out from everybody. Plenty of them got design-ins (chosen to have a product built around them). For PC, nobody could compete with the wave of the PC-compatibles running Windows on x86. Many of the new microprocessors did come out in non-PC products like workstations - where it didn't matter as much.
