Former U.S. Soldier Accused of Trying to Give Classified Secrets to China
- myvoiceismypprt 3y agoWhy is it that someone who is trained as an intelligence officer and almost certainly knows how information system security / audit works often seems to make obvious mistakes in their attempt to defect to a foreign adversary? It seems odd that someone with this level of expertise would make obvious incriminating google searches and similarly send incriminating emails. Then again, we may only be learning of those who are (paradoxically) lacking in basic operational security. Was this person perhaps hoping to get caught to raise awareness for their reports of corruption?
- gumby 3y agoI presume the training is on things not to do, not how to avoid detection. So if you analyze data, someone else has collected it, and someone else gets your output, and everybody has different opsec requirements. And everyone has different domain expertise. The mathematicians who come up with encryption algorithms likely don’t have the same expertise as the people who decap chips to extract keys. > Then again, we may only be learning of those who are (paradoxically) lacking in basic operational security. History has shown this is definitely the case, both in espionage and crime in general.
- lazide 3y agoA lot of folks have been losing their minds lately. Likely part of it.
- _yo2u 3y agoAgreed this whole things smells like a psyop He says “My experience includes … running sources as a spy handler, surveillance detection and other advanced psychological operation strategies.” And he uses his regular iphone with google?
- meepmorp 3y agoMaybe he's just an idiot who talks big.
- mbfg 3y agobehind a paywall, so couldn't read. I'm just hoping it wasn't secrets about our nuclear subs.
- defrost 3y agoI wouldn't worry, that cat left the bag some time ago.

- withinboredom 3y agoFWIW, I did the same job in the army. I have no desire to share my experience with anyone… but I left the US and I have no desire to go back except to visit family. Maybe that means something, maybe it doesn’t.
