I used to run Windows as a guest os with passthru access to a dedicated disk/drive and it did run great. I could even reboot natively into Windows using the same disk. I haven't done it again on my upgraded machines and instead use a dedicated Windows gaming machine. Proton should work fine for the games I play as it doesn't need any (incompatible) anti-cheat software--just haven't got around to it.
