Man jailed in UK’s treason conviction was encouraged by AI chatbot
- jjgreen 3y agoThe guy went on his obviously doomed adventure with instructions on how to treat his body after he was killed, this is a failed attempted suicide by security guard. He's obviously mentally ill (he's in Broadmoor) so not fit to stand trial. Why has he been tried?
- RugnirViking 3y agoThe trial is presumably to establish whether he is indeed mentally ill and not fit to stand trial (i.e. bringing in psychologists to speak on the matter etc) no? It may be a short trial, but I don't think it can just be closed without question
- jjgreen 3y agoFrom the BBC: Following his arrest, Chail was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and diagnosed as psychotic shortly afterwards. As the judge weighed up the sentence, the extent to which his mental health issues influenced Chail's actions featured heavily. But the judge concluded Chail had experienced homicidal thoughts that he acted upon before becoming psychotic - and therefore deserved a prison sentence. In the end, he was given a hybrid order, which means Chail will remain at Broadmoor high-security hospital until he is well enough to serve his sentence in prison. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-66108009 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-66108009

- bell-cot 3y ago> He said his intent was [...] to assassinate the Queen in a Star Wars-inspired plan to avenge [a 1919] atrocity during British rule in India. Prosecutors said that Chail was encouraged to undertake this plot after discussing it at length with an AI-powered chatbot that egged him on and bolstered his resolve. > According to prosecutors, Chail sent “thousands” of sexual messages to the chatbot [...maybe an important distinction in details here...] that advertised itself as primarily being for erotic roleplay... Certainly this is bad PR for AI, and a maybe a good lesson for non-technical people with utopian notions about AI...but it sounds like this guy could have been similarly "egged on" by Eliza, a Magic Eight Ball, a tarot deck, or James Bond movies.
- xeckr 3y ago>at the time of his arrest on Christmas Day, 2021 A literal aeon ago as far as chatbot tech is concerned
- slowmovintarget 3y agoRight. Pre-GPT. You'd essentially have to imagine the plot all on your own.
- dragonwriter 3y agoDec 25, 2021 was not pre-GPT. Or even pre-GPT-3.
- xeckr 3y agoAbout a year before ChatGPT, when the GPT-3 API wasn't as widely accessible as it is today.
