And what does it do?
> This sensor detects when the laptop lid is closed, and turns the screen and fan off, and puts the laptop to sleep
Talk about stupid overengineering. You know what other notebooks do? They use something called a magnet and a Hall sensor to achieve the same thing, reliably.
- extraduder_ire 3y agoApple used to do that, but there had been (somewhat rare) issues with it getting triggered unintentionally. Especially if you stacked one macbook on top of another. Even with logic to ensure that two magnet pieces are activated at the same time.
- jwells89 3y agoMagnetic watchbands like the Milanese Loop band Apple sells can also cause issues with magnetic lid sensors.
- 0dayz 3y agoIn defense of Apple, there's various issues with using that common solution on their macbooks (I've seen it never go to sleep to randomly starting up). Now Apple not releasing the tool is silly and stupid.
- QuadmasterXLII 3y agoOverengineered or not, I’ve owned a lot of laptops in my life and my macbook is the only one that you can trust to sleep if you close it and put it in your backpack
- graftak 3y agoThat is due to software, not the lid sensor.
