I remember watching a '60 min' episode on CBS about Avionics parts counterfeits some 20 years ago. Counterfeits and low grade steel fake parts have been a thing in aviation for a very long time. It has always been up to QA and regulatory to keep you and I safe. No point in thinking of this as part of some subversive war, greed is more than enough to explain it.
