Project IDX: An experimental web-based development workspace from Google
- jauntywundrkind 3y agoIt's hard to imagine Google can win significant mindshare when Microsoft has utterly dominated & owned the space by giving away so much in Vscode. Whatever Google does, it just seems so unlikely it will accrue & accumulate such briadscale ecosystem support. There are so many great plugins for vscode. The js extension system makes 3rd party delivering wonders easy for them. It's hard to imagine anyone else figuring out a real solid tactic to keep ecosystem momentum anywhere near as high. I hope we do see competition! But this seems like the sort of closed isolated effort a boisterous isolated company would do... it seems like what Microsoft would have done decades ago. That said, Google does seem to be targeting the one really hard to do icky thing in IDEs, by offering integrated native app dev.
