It sounds like your options are:
1) Leave without any shares.
2) Stick around for a year and then sell your shares.
3) Stick around for a few months, see how things go, and maybe decide to stick around for longer if things are looking up.
Your right to some compensation for your work in the event of leaving before you are fully vested in your shares became tenuous when you agreed to stick around until a year from now, and went out the window when your partners declined to bend the rules for you.
I would imagine your partners would be grateful for your help at this critical stage despite whatever awkwardness arose when you talked openly about leaving.
